Science and imagination with Woodpeckers

9th November 2025
This term, Woodpecker Class at Lavant CE Primary School have been mixing science and imagination in a truly delicious way! Their most recent Learning Journey explored the fascinating world of states of matter — and ended with each pupil designing and creating their very own Willy Wonka–style chocolate bar.

The children began by investigating how materials change when they are heated or cooled. There were plenty of “oohs” and “aahs” as chocolate melted, water turned to steam, and ice became liquid again. Once our budding chocolatiers had mastered the science behind melting, mixing, and solidifying, the class put their knowledge to the test by creating their own unique chocolate bars, filled with a wide range of culinary delights. The chocolate inventions were as imaginative as they were mouth-watering.

And the learning didn’t stop there! In English, pupils took on the role of persuasive advertisers, writing tempting descriptions to convince even the most sensible shopper to try their creations.  The Learning Journey finished with a “Chocolate Showcase,” where children showed off, pitched, and finally tasted, their sweet inventions. Needless to say, there were (chocolatey) smiles all round.  Who knew learning about solids, liquids, and gases could be so delicious?
