Pallant House Visit

9th May 2023

As a fun new beginning to our latest learning journey all about art, Year 1 and year 2 visited Pallant Art Gallery. We were treated to a tour of the exhibits in the “old house” with particular attention being paid to the Barbara Hepworth sculpture Single Form (Nocturne). The children had an opportunity to sketch the beautiful smooth sculpture and study its shape, surfaces and peer through the large central hole.

We also saw a range of other art: still lifes, abstract art, more 3D sculptures and portraits. We even saw a real life Lowry painting which meant a lot to the year 2 who had studied the artist last year.

We then had the opportunity to have a go at being sculptors ourselves. We designed a small model and then carved it out of a bar of soap! It was brilliant. The soap was so soft it was easy to shape it into our design using only a teaspoon.

We then headed back to school to study, compare and mimic the landscapes of David Hockney and Vincent Van Gogh. We hope by the end of this journey to have created our own landscapes in the style of each artist and to have produced a descriptive setting piece of writing for one. Perhaps we’ll even open our own art gallery!
