Reading Buddies

Peer Mentors and Reading Buddies
The children in Year 5 and 6 have all received training from a company called SALUS on how to be an effective peer mentor.
They have  learnt to:
  • Improve communication skills
  • Increase self-esteem and confidence
  • Encourage and develop peer relationships
  • Increase ability to understand and empathise with others
  • Develop decision making skills
  • Develop conflict resolution skills
  • Instil a sense of responsibility
  • Develop a sense of community and belonging
  • Improved behaviour
  • Improved attendance
  • Reduction in bullying
As trained peer mentors, the Year 5 and 6 children have each been paired with a reading buddy from Wren or Robin Class (EYFS and KS1). Once a week, normally during the after lunch reading activities session, the buddies meet in the library to hear their younger partner read and offer them advice support and encouragement on how to improve their reading. This is also a way of ensuring that all of the younger children have a really strong (older) child role model within the school.
