Novium Museum visit by Woodpecker Class

1st October 2018

As a super start to our smuggling learning journey Woodpecker class visited the Novium Museum in Chichester. We took part in a workshop that really sparked our interest and taught us lots about what was smuggled. We were surprised to see wool in the group of smuggled items as we only thought about items being smuggled into the country. British wool was in high demand and so was often smuggled out to avoid paying export tax on it!

We also discovered all about the Hawkhurst Gang, a group of notorious smugglers based on the coast around Chichester. We learnt all about the terrible punishments given to anyone involved in smuggling. All of this helped us to write descriptions for our own smuggling character.
